Phoenix Sub (West Valley) news.

Went for a fast recon trip to the Phoenix Sub west of Buckeye, and found a new tricolor signal and fresh bonding wires at Arlington. Speculation: They would not signal the line for the Palo Verde Nuke Plant, nor would they for occasional freight, as they could run the line via DTC. Perhaps the long-awaited reopening of the line. However, did to abt 5 miles west and did not find any new stuff out there. Time will tell; there has been talk for at least 7 years on a startup.

I have not been out there to see it yet. Many will be replaced along the line including new houses (cabinets) during the 2 month project. This project is staying east of the wye.

When I was out there last month, there were quite a few pieces of earth moving equipment working on the large empty lot north of the main just east of the wye. Did you see any activity out there?

The tamper and regulator are still in town and getting track warrants on a regular basis to go west. I believe one of the jobs for the tamper is new tracks for Hickman Egg Ranch.

Major news coming in a month or two as soon as I can confirm something.

On another note, last month the grade crossings at Baseline Road and at Apache Road were replaced and concrete panels were installed. Ties, rail and Concrete panels are sitting at most paved grade crossings between Buckeye and Arlington.

I was out there on Sat and there was no activity of any kind. did see the signal boxes, though. And one of the grade crossings. Will be interested to know what the major news is. I can't believe they are re-signaling the line just for Palo Verde or the Solar installations.

I wanted to stop by there Saturday. I went out to the Dam Bridge between Arlington and Gillespie on Old US 80. The 9 span steel truss bridge, 2 lane, 19 foot wide, 1,662 foot long bridge over the Gila River was built in 1921. It is on the list of National Register of Historic Places. Maricopa County DOT built a Gazebo/lookout that gives a great view of Gillespie dam that was breeched and became one of Arizonas worst dam failures.

MCDOT injstalled plaques telling about the historical significance of the bridge and another one for the wildlife found in the area, a turnout was built for parking on the eastbond side of the bridge.

There was a re-dedication ceremony for the Gillespie Dam Bridge attended by the Mayors of Buckeye and Gila Bend, there was a classic car parade, live band playing, speeches by county officials and the local chapter of the MIA/POW society was there. Free BBQ for everyone.

It is one of the Arizona Centennial Legacy Projects. Check it out next time you are out that way.

I've been over that bridge several times some years back. It surely is an anachronism.
Old Highway 80 of which this bridge is a part, was as I recall, the first paved road in the state.

It is on the other side of town, but today I noticed that the crossing on 35th ave just North of Durango has to signals that were just installed. Phoenix just ripped out the tracks that cross the road about 6 months ago. The signals and cross bucks are still up. They built a block wall with a steel gate around the tracks and have the yellow "wheel stoppers" if you will in place by the gate. The signals are tri color looking, 2 bulbs on top, one in middle. One is facing West on one side of the tracks, the other East on the other side of the tracks. I have no clue as to why they would install them when the track ends at the sidewalk. I tried to get a picture today but the light turned on my. Tomorrow I will try to get one and post it.
